Sisi Wei

chief impact officer CalMatters

Sisi Wei is the Chief Impact Officer at CalMatters and The Markup, where she pioneers innovative strategies to empower readers, serve communities, and drive meaningful real-world change through journalism.

Previously, Sisi served as Editor-in-Chief of The Markup from 2022 to 2024, during which she spearheaded a pivotal update to the organization's mission: challenging technology to serve the public good. Her leadership led to transformative impact, including the removal of privacy-invading Meta Pixel trackers from dozens of  websites across multiple industries, reforms by local and state governments nationwide to address or discontinue the use of biased algorithms, and the filing of multiple class action lawsuits in response to investigative reporting. Under her tenure, The Markup also expanded its journalism to be directly responsive to the public's needs — publishing  story recipes for journalists, step-by-step research and accountability guides for the public, and skills workshops for communities.

Previously, Sisi was co-executive director of OpenNews and assistant managing editor at ProPublica. At ProPublica, she led three editorial teams specializing in news apps, interactive storytelling, and visual investigations. She also directed interdisciplinary investigations, including one that earned the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2020. During her seven years at ProPublica, she exposed abuses of power and breaches of public trust in areas such as healthcare, higher education, government, and immigration. In 2024, Sisi was honored with the Freedom of the Press Rising Star Award. She also received the Gwen Ifill Award from IWFM in 2021 for her exceptional contributions to journalism.
