Karen Mahabir

Karen Mahabir is the Director of News Talent for Development at The Associated Press, based in New York. She also is a leader of the AP’s online harassment committee and until February had served as the company’s fact check and misinformation editor. Karen joined the AP in Mexico City as an editor on the Latin America Desk in 2005, and later worked as a reporter, breaking news supervisor and acting news editor in the Mid-Atlantic bureau in Washington, and then as a producer at the Nerve Center, the AP’s global all-formats coordination desk.

Before joining the AP, Karen spent many years working as a local reporter and columnist at newspapers in New York and New Jersey. She also spent two years serving as Managing Editor of News at the HuffPost. Karen holds a bachelor’s degree in English Literature, with a concentration in African, Asian and Caribbean Studies, from the University of Sussex in England. She also has a master’s degree in International Journalism from City University of London. She is on the board of the South Asian Journalists Association and is a frequent panelist and guest speaker on issues around mis-/disinformation, verification and trust in the media.
