Soma Basu
Soma Basu is an investigative journalist based in New Delhi, India. For over a decade, she has been covering issues of environmental justice and human rights in the subcontinent. She has achieved a number of prestigious journalist awards:
- Received the Young Environment Journalist Award 2011 from the Centre for Media Studies and Panos South Asia
- Won the competition for best-published articles ‘Reporting on the fate of victims of armed violence’ from the Press Institute of India and the International Committee of the Red Cross 2012
- Awarded the United Nations Correspondents Association Global Prize for coverage of Climate Change, 2013
- Received the Kurt Schork Memorial Award 2017 for International Journalism
Disillusioned by political and corporate interference in mainstream newsrooms, she launched the non-profit media platform reporteratlarge.org for journalists to publish underreported investigative stories. She provides training to hyperlocal news platforms to improve the content and diversify media discourse.
In November 2017, Soma travelled alone and undercover from Addis Ababa to the last Ethiopian village before the South Sudan border, travelling 900 km in public transport, without any media visa or permit, nor organisational backup, and with limited funds. She reported on the human rights abuses in Ethiopia, one of the most dangerous countries for journalists.
Soma is a journalism fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Oxford University. During the 6-month fellowship, she is researching on fake news and disinformation campaigns run by political parties and dissemination of hate speech against minorities and fringe communities in India leading to hate crimes.
