Olivia Ma is the Director of the Google News Lab, a global team that forms part of the Google News Initiative, the company’s effort to collaborate with the news industry to support the sustainable creation of quality journalism. Olivia works directly with product and engineering teams to launch and grow news products including Google News and Subscribe with Google. Olivia joined Google in 2008 when she served as YouTube’s first News Manager, overseeing YouTube’s programming and product strategy across major events such as the 2011 Arab Spring and the 2008 & 2012 US Elections. Olivia also served as Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Center for Public Integrity, the parent organization for the ICIJ when it broke the Panama Papers.
Prior to joining YouTube and Google, Olivia was the product manager for Plum, a social media-sharing website acquired by Nokia, and ran Current, a national college news magazine published in partnership with Newsweek. Olivia graduated from Harvard University. A proud Washington D.C. native, Olivia currently resides in California with her husband and two young daughters.
