Marije Vlaskamp

East Asia specialist de Volkskrant

After her history study and journalism post-doc, Marije Vlaskamp (1969) worked as a general news reporter. She mainly wrote about migration, human trafficking and human rights. She studied Mandarin Chinese at Peoples University in Beijing before she was posted in China in 2001. She covered Greater China and occasionally other Asian countries for 18 years for various newspapers, websites and news/documentary broadcasters. Since her return to the Netherlands she works as the East Asia specialist at the foreign news division of de Volkskrant, a major Dutch quality newspaper. In this role, her main focus is on the global impact of China's rise.
