Jianli Yang

Jianli Yang (born in China, Shandong Province, in 1963) is a scholar and democratic activist. He joined the democracy movement in China as early as the 1980s and was forced to leave his country after the Tiananmen Square massacre. He was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison for espionage and illegal entry by the Chinese government in April 2002. After an international campaign for his release, he was released in April 2007. He is a Harvard Fellow and president of Initiatives for China, a movement pro-democracy committed to promoting a peaceful democratic transition in China.
