Gabriella Stern
Gabriella Stern is the Director of Media and External Relations at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she manages the foundation’s global media, partnerships and external relations. Prior to her appointment at the foundation, she served in various capacities at The Wall Street Journal for nearly 25 years, most recently as the Editor of Strategic Initiatives. She has more than three decades of international experience in journalism and newsroom leadership, and helps the foundation engage constructively with media organizations and other partners on issues related to health, development, poverty eradication, education, and women and girls’ empowerment.
She began her career as a reporter with The Omaha World-Herald, moving to the Journal in 1991. At the Journal, she was stationed in Pittsburgh, Detroit, London, Singapore and New York. During her time there, she was a staff reporter, deputy bureau chief, news editor, Dow Jones Newswires senior editor, and ultimately deputy managing editor and member of the newsroom’s senior leadership team. She is a graduate of Yale University, where she earned a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Political Science.
