Douglas McGray

co-founder & editor-in-chief Pop-Up Magazine Productions

Douglas McGray creates new things. He’s the founder of Beyond Beyond, a new incubator and production company that collaborates with major media companies and cultural institutions, and also the co-founder of Duettist, a soon-to-be-announced nonprofit media experiment that funds ($25,000 to $50,000 grants, twelve in the coming year) and produces creative collaborations between pairs of people who do different things, including prominent and emerging journalists, musicians, visual artists, and more.

Previously, McGray was the co-founder of The California Sunday Magazine, which covered California, the American West, Asia, and Latin America for an international audience. The magazine won a 2021 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing and, twice, Magazine of the Year from the Society of Publication Designers, the top award for American media art and design. He was also the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Pop-Up Magazine, the pioneering “live magazine,” which presented multimedia journalism and storytelling spectacles at major performing arts venues across North America, as well as a variety of adventurous multimedia journalism projects. And he has written print features for the New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine and made audio stories for This American Life. He lives in California.
