Wiretapping: a legal case study

In 2021 the Italian newspaper Domani revealed that journalists covering the Mediterranean migration crisis had been wiretapped by Italian prosecutors. They included freelancer Nancy Porsia whose personal details and those of confidential sources had been collected through her phone. In 2017 Guardian correspondent Lorenzo Tondo discovered that prosecutors in Sicily had secretly recorded conversations between himself and a source. With surveillance against journalists on the rise globally, what can independent journalists do to protect themselves from wiretapping and other forms of surveillance? What legal rights do they have nationally and internationally? The panel speakers will share their personal experiences and provide recommendations and advice.
