Verification of online content can be intimidating, but it is not difficult. Becoming an expert requires repetition, persistence and using digital investigative tools with a little creativity. Information travels so quickly now, and disinformation is becoming so easy to generate and spread that it is important for every journalist — not just the tech reporter and the social media editor — to understand basic verification skills. In this workshop you will be introduced to the five pillars of verification (provenance, source, date, location, motivation) plus the essential tools, concepts and checklists via First Draft’s recommended toolbox.
In 2020, First Draft will launch its Digital Investigations Certificate of Excellence programme (DICE). Attendees can earn credits towards their certificate by participating in this workshop. The workshop is also designed to complement one of First Draft’s Essential Guides and printed copies will be provided to each participant.
Organised in association with First Draft.
