Cybercrime and technology enabled crimes explained to journalists

Modern technology and digital communication play an enormous role in our daily lives. State infrastructure, the private sector, and the general public increasingly rely on information technology to provide basic services, carry out transactions, and communicate, whether that means connecting with someone around the corner or on the other side of the world. However, in light of these developments, global society has been exposed to a multitude of new types of crime being carried out across the realm of cyberspace.

Cyber threats, including cybercrime, cyber warfare, terrorism, and espionage are affecting the security of countries and citizens on a broad scale. In 2014 alone, massive cyber attacks against multinational companies, governments, and news outlets, have put at risk the personal data of millions of people and have made headlines worldwide.

Through this overview presentation, journalists and communications professionals will gain a basic understanding of the current cyber threat landscape and the measures currently employed, and those still needed, to counter cyber crime.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed their ability to identify, interpret and communicate cyber threats, and to understand the current challenges facing both the law enforcement and international communities.
