Narratives about gen AI are largely shaped by Western perspectives while the impact of the tech across the world mostly revolves around the basic local issues — health, education, and the economy. So is there sufficient local expertise to evaluate AI technologies critically, and how does the influence of Western-led reporting on AI impact storytelling and journalism in the rest of the world?

This conversation will discuss the scope of reporting on gen AI in India and other non-Western countries, and the challenges of representing local needs and local values while addressing biases in gen AI tools that are trained predominantly on Western datasets.

A conversation between Anup Kaphle (editor-in-chief Rest of World) and Nilesh Christopher (Nieman Fellow at Harvard University and award-winning tech reporter from India).
