With press freedom increasingly under attack and violence against journalists on the rise, there is much to be said about the state of media today. Most media organizations, however, shy away from reporting on their own industry, following the old adage that news outlets themselves should not become the story. Yet new studies show that trust can be gained by telling the public more, not less, about how the world of news works and what challenges it must tackle.

This panel discussion, featuring columnists from Project Syndicate’s Press Released series which, in collaboration with the European Journalism Centre, provides a unique platform to frame and stimulate debate about the myriad challenges facing the press today, looks at how the media covers issues of press freedom and evaluates why this is important and how it can generate change.
