This session aims to discuss challenges in the online content removal of independent media in the countries of Southeastern Europe. In the already hostile media environment where most of the independent media publish online, there is an increasing trend of removing content by outside actors: governments, Big Tech companies, courts and lawyers representing oligarchs and tycoons. For many independent outlets this is one more example of further undermining of an already troubled media freedom. Lack of regulations, lack of Big Tech representatives and weak institutions prevent those affected from fighting back. Affected parties also often have no insight into the reasons for content removal or blocking.
Organised in association with Balkan Investigative Reporting Network.
