Memes, journalism and visual misinformation

In continuation from the conversation at #IJF17, this panel will look more concretely at the role of memes and online visual culture in our information ecosystem, and why it's important for journalists to better understand both. It will include a presentation of findings from the work of Visual Social Media Lab and First Draft on building a typology of visual misinformation and a look at the memetic communications style of political leaders and the students who organized #MarchForOurLives. We will explore the 2017 Council of Europe paper entitled Information Disorder: Toward an interdisciplinary framework for research and policy making and the implications of its recommendations in the context of internet culture.

After the panel, the group will host a closed-door, hands-on dinner and workshop with #IJF18 attendees on April 12 and April 13. This workshops are designed to give attendees a better sense of how to work with and analyze visual content online, and it will be led by the panelists.
