Media manipulation campaigns globally continue to target elections, wars, and crises. There’s hardly a single country that has been unaffected by mis/disinformation and media manipulation.

In this presentation, Joan Donovan, former research director at Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center, will teach attendees how to look at the problem through the media manipulation lifecycle. She’ll take participants through the five stages of media manipulation, from (1) planning and origins to (3) responses by journalists, politicians and activists to (5) how a campaign adjusts to new environments. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of how to dissect and cover manipulation campaigns.

In the second half of the presentation, Jane Lytvynenko, freelance reporter and former contributing researcher to Joan’s team, will show hands-on monitoring approaches to mis/ disinformation. Participants will learn how to conduct advances searches on Twitter and Google, they will also walk away with an understanding of how to monitor Telegram and search YouTube effectively. Attendees will be able to apply these skills outside media manipulation research and use them in their daily reporting, especially during crisis situations.
