The mafia today recognize the significant role of information in the fight against organized crime. With anonymous letters, bullets in envelopes, damaged cars and also violent threats, a new frontier of intimidation against journalists has opened up. In Calabria, home to the 'Ndrangheta (the strongest and most globalised organized criminal organisation), but also in Sicily and the North where the clans have outsourced most of their business, anyone who writes about the mafia easily becomes a target. Attempts to gag journalists who write about these issues have become common practice not only for the mafia bosses - always allergic to media attention - but also for associated politicians and businessmen.
