Journalism safety is no longer just a critical issue for those going to cover traditional war zones. Wherever journalists work nowadays - online or offline - they have to contemplate physical and psychological risks. The rise in domestic terror threats has affected the news media in ways our colleagues might not previously have imagined. It's moved the frontline from battle grounds to right into the heart of domestic newsrooms. Online harassment and assaults on digital security and privacy have left journalists and their sources exposed and at risk, while governments previously viewed as press freedom havens have turned on the mainstream media, shaking the very foundations of journalism safety and independence.
