Russian independent media: how to function under Putin's regime

The Russian Constitution tells it straight: censorship is forbidden (Chapter 2, article 29.5). But during the last 15 years, Putin’s regime has worked hard to monopolize the media space. It has used different means, editors have been forced to resign, journalists have been killed or beaten, media outlets forced to shut down. In this dramatic political reality editors and journalists, magazines and websites who do not want to give away their constitutional rights are facing a difficult challenge. Each of them needs to develop the right strategy and tactics to survive. The news website meduza.io has moved its headquarters abroad. For several months TV RAIN could broadcast only from the provisional miniature studio arranged in a private apartment. The OpenRussia web platform choose not to register as a media organisation. In this session, journalists and editors representing Russia’s leading independent media will share their experiences and outline how they see their mission in the times ahead.
