Non-EU migrants arriving in Italy: why the shoddy treatment?

Over the last decade, a range of Italian politicians and political parties have from time to time fuelled the anxiety of citizens by claiming that the country's security has been threatened by uncontrollable illegal immigration, thus justifying the adoption of strict measures. The results for migrants from these policies and the legislative framework that followed can be seen by all: labour exploitation, unjust and prolonged administrative detention, access denied to certain basic forms of international protection.
