Energy challenges and European geopolitics
The European Union currently imports 80% of its petrol and 60% of its gas requirements. Alternative energy sources, even within the parameters set by the Horizon 2050 strategy, will not be sufficient to meet demand. The objective of the Strategy 2020 to produce 20% of energy requirements through renewable energy sources will not be easily reached. The European Union needs long-lasting energy supply agreements with producing countries and with transit countries (gas pipelines). Will the European Union be able to overcome national interests and meet the energy challenge for the benefit of all its citizens?
