The existential crisis confronting independent media globally is getting worse. Existing funding sources and models are nowhere near enough to turn the tide. The development of a new wave of Journalism Funds in recent years, however, does offer a new source of hope.
These Funds - defined as “locally-led initiatives that seek to aggregate multiple sources of funding through an independently governed mechanism to provide long-term financing across the independent journalism ecosystem” - offer a chance to unlock new sources of funding to finance independent journalism and to shift power, bringing decision-making to actors intimately familiar with the local context and needs of their media ecosystem.

This informal meet-up is an opportunity to share experiences, exchange strategies and tactics, and explore new ideas on how we can best join forces to promote new solutions to finance independent journalism.
